Adventure First was set up by Mike Gifford who has over fifteen years experience in the outdoor industry.  We aim to provide high quality and affordable outdoor activities and adventures to anyone and everyone!  Our staff were all brought together for their infectious enthusiasm for the outdoors and their passion for introducing others to what they love, as well as their expert ability to pass on their skills which have been built up over many years.

Mike Gifford

Mike is a highly experienced and qualified Outdoor Instructor and has over fifteen years experience in outdoor guiding, instruction, and technical advisory work all over the UK and further afield.  Mike’s qualifications include: Mountain Instructor Award (MIA), BCU Level 4 coach award, Swift Water Rescue Technician, Scottish Rafting Association Trip Leader & Raft Guide, Mountain Bike Leader, Alpine Ski Leader, and Dry Slope Ski Instructor. Based in Aberdeen, Mike can regularly be found climbing, surfing, kayaking and skiing throughout Scotland whenever possible. Contact Mike.

Liam Irving

Liam is a highly qualified and experienced outdoor professional who has been working in the outdoors for 10 years. Liam holds qualifications in Winter Mountain Leadership, climbing, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking and many more. Originally from the west coast of Scotland, he is now based in Aviemore where he climbs, kayaks and surfs as often as possible.

Paul Horsfield

Paul is a highly experienced all round outdoor professional. Paul is a keen mountaineer, climber, mountain biker but he is most often found in his canoe or kayak exploring the rivers of Scotland. With qualifications in all the outdoor activities that Adventure First offer, you are in very experienced hands with Paul and you can’t help but have a great adventure with him!

Martin Vardy

Martin is a highly experienced surfer and you can often find him at surf spots all over Scotland and further afield. Martin specialises and holds qualifications in Surfing, Coasteering, Gorge Walking as well as many more. With over 10 years experience in the Scottish Fire Service he has a great deal of experience in rope and water rescue as well as specialising in first aid. You’re in safe hands with Martin!

Greg Wilson

Greg is a specialist in coasteering and gorge walking activities as well as experienced in many others. With experience in the Scottish Fire Service Greg has many qualifications in rescue techniques, first aid and working at height. Greg holds the SLSGB Coasteering Award and is often found jumping in the sea or wandering the Scottish hills working on his Mountain Leader Award. Greg has an infectious enthusiasm for everything he does and can’t help but inspire you!

Duncan Paterson

Duncan is a specialist in mountaineering and rock climbing activities. Duncan holds his MIA and is always playing in the mountains when he is not guiding in them. With a wealth of experience across the outdoor industry Duncan holds qualifications in coasteering and gorge walking as well as his mountaineering qualifications.

Alex Reid

Alex is a keen mountaineer and can be found exploring the Scottish highlands whilst mountaineering, skiing or rock climbing. Alex is a Winter Mountain leader and Climbing instructor but you can also find him coasteering and gorge walking. Alex is a highly enthusiastic outdoor professional and is studying to be a doctor at Aberdeen University so you’re in safe hands with Alex!

Jamie Carnie
